Unit 1 Paraphrasing Assigment latest 2016 October
The paraphrasing assignment is designed to help you rewrite
a paragraph in your own words. This is a
skill you will need for this course and future courses as you conduct research
to write papers.
Complete the following steps:
1. Watch the
following video on plagiarism and APA citation format:
http://flash1r.apa.org/apastyle/basics/index.htm
2. Read the
following course requirement for writing in Psychology courses at Post
University.
For all written work in this course, it is expected that you
will write using your OWN words. You are
expected to discuss psychological concepts, theories, and research
results. In doing so, you will learn to
communicate using the “language” and terminology of Psychology. Although you will learn the language of
Psychology, it is critical that you communicate your learning by using your own
words. If you describe the theory or
research results of others; you must paraphrase the main ideas in your own
words. Watch this video below to learn
more:
https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/563/02/
Paraphrasing is the only way you can clearly show your
instructor what YOU have learned. Paraphrasing is different from
summarizing. Watch this video to learn
the difference:
https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/563/1/
3. After
watching the video, paraphrase the paragraphs below. That is, re-write the passage in your OWN
words.
The following passage is taken from your textbook, Chapter
1, pp. 26-27.
“The scientfic method is the approach used by psychologists
to systematically acquire knowledge and understanding about behavior and other
phenomena of interst. It consists of four main steps: (1) identifying questions
of interest, (2) formulating an explanation, (3) carrying out research designed
to support or refute an explanation, and (4) communicating the findings.
In using the scientifc method, psychologists start by
identifying questions of interest. We have all been cirous at some time about
our observations of everyday behavior. We have all be curious at some time
about our observations of everyday behavior. If you have ever asked yourself
why a particular teacher is so easily annoyed, why a friend is always late for
appointments, or how your dog understands commands, you have been formulating
questions about human behavior.
Psychologists, too, ask questions about the nature and
causes of behavior. They may want to explore explanations for everyday
behaviors or for various phenomena. They may also pose questions that build on
findings from their previous research or from research carried out by other
psychologists. Or they may produce new questions that are based on curiosity, creativity,
or insight.
After a question has been identified, the next step in the
scientific method is to develop a theory to explain observed phenomenon.
Theories are broad explanations and predictions concerning phenomena of
interest. They provide a framework for understanding the relationships among a
set of otherwise unorganized principles.”
4. Remember
to include in-text citations. Your in-text citation for this assignment should
look like the sentence below. Note that the in-text citation comes before the
period at the end of the sentence.
This is the sentence referencing the resource(Feldman,
2013).
5. In
addition, you will need to include a reference at the end of your paraphrasing
assignment. Your reference should look like this:
References
Feldman, R. S. (2015). Essentials of understanding
psychology. (11th Ed.). New York, NY:
McGraw Hill.
