Details:
You work for a curriculum development company that has created a program designed to teach reading to students in grades 1-3.
1) Use the following information to ensure successful completion of the assignment:
a) This assignment uses a grading rubric (see attached) .
b)Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines. Please cite ALL REFERENCES!!
2) Include the following in your experiment design
a) Develop a hypothesis, labeling the independent and dependent variables,
b) Discuss how the psychoanalytic, cognitive, and behavior/social development of the students will affect the way you design and conduct the experiment.
c) Discuss what the experimental and control groups are doing in the study
d) Decide how many participants are needed and from what population groups they should come
e) Discuss random sampling and random assignment.
Assignment
Experimental designs are the Gold Standard for research. This week’s project is a mini-proposal of a quantitative experimental design on teaching children and measuring the efficacy of the teaching method. The assignment gives you the general topic area of reading competency, but a learner can use another disciplinary topic if he or she chooses. It would be advised, if one has a way of integrating an area of his or her interest or expertise with the instructions given on the assignment, so that we develop you skill in designing experiments and refine your expertise. For example, you can use any learning a child would do in school that could based on the theoretical foundations of cognitive, social, and psychodynamic theories of development for ages 7 – 12 years old. The assignment will be mostly graded on the design of your proposed study.
The general sections that need to be written are:Introduction: Background,Literature Review, Methodology, and Summary. The learner needs to begin the Introduction section with a Purpose Statement for the experimental design proposal: “Purpose statement – Provides one sentence statement of purpose including the problem statement, sample, methodology, and design.”From the purpose statement, provide a brief background of the problem and conclude the section with a summary sentence that transitions to a Literature Review. Your theoretical foundations are: Cognitive, Social, and Psychodynamic theories of learning and development. Synthesize a rationale for why your experiment is needed to test the teaching method’s efficacy. In this section, you should begin it with a Problem Statement that is aligned to your purpose statement: “Problem statement – Describes the phenomena to study (qualitative) or variables/groups (quantitative) to study,in one sentence:It is not knownif, and to what extent…” When you get to the methodology section, you need to introduce that section with a re-statement of the Purpose Statement.
Methodology and design – Describes the selected methodology and specific research design to address problem statement and research questions(Purpose Statement does this)
Then cover in this section:
- Sample and location – Identifies sample, needed sample size, and location (study phenomena with small numbers and variables/groups with large numbers).
- Location: Your Choice (may affect culture in the literature you use)
- Population: Elementary School Children Grades 1-3
- Sample: probability or nonprobability and why, plus random or nonrandom assignment.
- Number of observations will be two conditions of learning.
- Research questions – Provides research questions to collect data to answer the problem statement and,
- Hypothesis & variables or Phenomena – Provides hypotheses with variables for each research question (quantitative)
- R1: Is there a difference between (based on the Independent Variable differences in the learning condition)
- 1H0: There is no difference…
- 1H1: There is a difference in competency…
- R1: Is there a difference between (based on the Independent Variable differences in the learning condition)
- Data collection – Describes primary instruments and sources of data to answer research questions:
- Independent variable 1
- Independent variable 2
- Dependent variable 1
- Data analysis – Describes the specific data analysis approaches to be used to address research questions.
Write the Summary and Conclusions mentioning the anticipated results, the general ethical issues for this design, and the limitations of the study.
