Overview: In weeks six and seven students examined the socioeconomic variables which
influence work, retirement, living arrangements and life choices. Students also learned that
social policies influence life choices in old age. This essay provides the student an opportunity
to address the social variables which influence growing old and encourages students to
consider how social policy affects the aging experience in our society. Course Objectives: 

CO1: Examine the impact of race, gender, and social class on individuals as they age.
CO2: Deconstruct stereotypes about the elderly in society.
CO4: Analyze historical and current policies that impact the lives of older adults.
CO5: Compare and contrast the experience of aging in the U.S. and in other countries.
CO6: Analyze the impact of ageism in society.
C07: Examine the impact of aging on social institutions Essay format:

1. The paper should be typed, double-spaced, 1” margins, arial or times new roman 11pt.
font, and saved as a .doc, .rtf, or.pdf in the format: Lastname_SOCI307_HW1.doc 
2. The essay should include an APA title page and reference page. 
3. Use APA format for citations and references. 
4. Short headers for each section are recommended 5. The essay should be 6-7 pages (not counting the title and reference page) Essay instructions, address each of the following sections in the essay:

a. Describes employment and unemployment patterns for the aging adult. 5. 6. 7. b. How do employment patterns influence retirement options for women? c. Describe the relationship of ageism to the Age Discrimination in Employment
Act (ADEA). Living arrangements in old age:
a. Explain how living arrangements of older adults are influenced by income,
health status, availability of caregivers and location. b. Describe several housing options including community based long-term care
and aging in place. Social policy:
a. Describe the importance of Medicare and Medicaid as it relates to the older
adult well-being b. Analyze the need for income maintenance, social services, health and longterm care services and supports (LTSS) for the aging population. c. Describe the importance of the Older American Act and the ways in which the
act supports older adults in the community. (The Older American Act was
reauthorized in 2016.) Social responsibility:
a. Analyze whose responsibility it should be to care for the vulnerable older adult
population. b. Should this be the responsibility of the government, private sector, or society? c. Go back to chapter 2 in the text book, and reread pages 48-50. Has the
impact of modernization influenced other countries as well as the United States
to take a more proactive role to insure the well-being of the aging population?
Explain your viewpoint. 

8. Write a concluding paragraph which connects back to your introduction and sums up
the main points of your essay. (No new information is added to the conclusion.) 

9. Include a reference page titled references. Place the references in APA format. Place
the references in alphabetical order. Keep in mind, a reference cannot go on the
reference page if does not match to an in-text citation within the essay. 

10. Use the textbook and at least three articles from the required course readings (in ereserves in the library) to help you support your perspective. Remember to include
proper APA in-text citations to give credit to your sources.
