Sociologists and other social scientists have recognized that social mobility (moving up or down the “social ladder”) is actually very difficult to achieve. For example, individuals are more likely to remain in the social class they were born into, as adults, rather than move up (or down). Why do you think this is? For example, why is it so hard for a poor or working class person who grew up in an low-income area to rise out of poverty? Think about the type of access to resources the “poor” have (i.e. lower quality schools, difficulty paying for/doing well in college, lack of access to healthcare and other benefits, etc.) Remember, we are looking at larger social issues faced by different classes.
