Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to (a) develop a mission statement, (b) identify consistency between the program mission statement and the parent institution, (c) identify collaborative input from classmates in the development of a mission, and (d) demonstrate skills in the development and articulation of ideas in a scholarly manner. Due Date: Submit by 11:59 p.m. MT Sunday of Week 2.
Students are given the opportunity to request an extension on assignments for emergent situations. Supporting documentation must be submitted to the assigned faculty. If the student’s request is not approved, the assignment is graded and a late penalty is applied as follows:
- Monday = 10% of total possible point reduction
- Tuesday = 20% of total possible point reduction
- Wednesday = 30% of total possible point reduction
If the student’s request is approved, the student will be informed of the revised due date. Should the student fail to meet the revised due date, the assignment is graded and a late penalty is applied as follows:
- Monday = 10% of total possible point reduction
- Tuesday = 20% of total possible point reduction
- Wednesday = 30% of total possible point reduction

Requirements
Assignment Criteria for the Paper
- Mission statement reflects original work of the student.
- Mission statement reflects uniqueness of the nursing program and is congruent with the mission statement of the parent institution.
- Mission statement is clear, concise, and succinct and includes teaching and service.
- Changes to the initial mission statement are identified, based on peer collaboration.
- There is a minimum of two scholarly references related to mission statement development.
- Grammar, spelling, punctuation, references, and citations are consistent with formal academic writing and APA format as expressed in the current edition.
- An introduction and conclusion are required in the paper.
The purpose of this week’s assignment is to develop a mission statement that is congruent with your parent organization’s mission statement. The group you have chosen to join (community college, public university or hospital), will determine your parent organization. It is important that your mission statement is in alignment with the parent organization’s while also making it unique to your own goals. What is it about your program that makes it stand out against others? Why would someone want to join that program?
Your paper should include the following components:
- Title Page
- Follow APA format (6th edition)
- Introduction
- Why are mission statements important? What is their purpose?
- Program Scenario
- Target Population
- Prelicensure BSN program in a public university
- Audience: Working nurses? Students? Those interested in healthcare?
- Target Population
- Parent Organization’s Mission Statement
- What is it? Where do you think their emphasis is?
- Your Mission Statement
- What are the goals of the program? How are you going to incorporate teaching and service? What makes your program or department unique?
- Is your mission statement congruent with the parent organization’s statement?
- Be clear and concise – Too many words may be confusing
- Peer Collaboration
- What comments did you receive from your peers regarding your mission statement? What key features do they think need to be included? How did you change your statement based off of their feedback?
- If you didn’t receive any feedback, read the responses made to other students and use those
- Conclusion
- Wrap it up; Why are mission statements important? What information can you provide your reader if they are trying to create their own mission statement?
- References
- You will need a minimum of two (2) scholarly resources
