Homework 2: Chapters 6, 8, and 9

Assignment must be completed INDEPENDENTLY.

Use own words, do not copy definitions straight from book.

1. Define
cell theory. (Please use own words, 1 pt.)

2. What is a
cell? Be as specific as possible. (1 pt.)

3. Make a
table comparing and contrasting prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Please
include relative size, presence or absence of certain important structures,
where in the world each is found, and two things they have in common. (4 pts.)

Prokaryote Eukaryote

Relative size

Structures present/absent

Locations found

Two structures they have in common

4. Compare
and contrast active transport with passive transport. (2 pts.)

5. Define
hypertonic solution, hypotonic solution and isotonic solution. (3 pts.)

6. Write out
the formula for photosynthesis. (1 pt.)

7. In our
photosynthesis experiment, we use phenol red indicator solution to investigate
photosynthetic ability of Elodea plant tissue. You used a straw to blow in the
test tube to turn it yellow and then sealed it and placed it in the light to do
photosynthesis (red color). Explain the results and the biological reasoning
behind why a color change happened and what gas did each color represent (HINT:
Carbon dioxide and Oxygen). Explain this as if you were talking to someone
without a background in biology. (3 pts.)

8. Using
simple words, describe the function of the following features and/or
structures: Refer to the book on page 98 or the internet. Use your own words
please! (2 pts.)

Cell wall:

Nucleus:

Mitochondria:

Chloroplast:

9. According
to the video you watched in class about the anatomy of the leaf; draw the
structure and label the following pats: Cuticle, epidermis, stomata, guard
cells, mesophyll and chloroplast (3 pts.)

Bonus (1 pt.): Out of these chapters, which experiment was
