Assignment: Critically Looking At Art
View the artwork posted by your instructor for this
assignment. Write a paragraph (300-400 words) about the artwork and address the
following items in your written assessment.
1. Immediate response –
What are your immediate responses? These are uncensored, irrational,
unselfconscious impressions of the artwork – – what you noticed first, what
stands out and how it affects you.
2. Objective Description –
Describe the artwork as if to someone who cannot see it.
3. Formal Observation –
Look hard at the formal matters in the artwork including presentation, material
choices, draftsmanship, visual elements and design principles.
4. Making Connections –
How does the artwork connect to other works of art we have seen in this class?
How does the artwork connect to society, politics or community? Consider how
the artwork is in conversation with other contemporary artworks or with work
from other historical periods.
