Week 1 discussion
DQ1 Please introduce yourself and share with the group what
you are doing in your volunteer experience.
DQ2 Give an example of an ethical issue you faced in your
life and describe how you worked through it.
Week 2 discussion
DQ1 What difficulties or challenges do you anticipate as you
prepare your journal entries throughout this course? For your first response to
this DQ, give your answer to this question. Then for your other responses this
week, read the responses of your fellow students and give them some feedback
and some suggestions as to how they might solve or avoid the problems they are
anticipating. Hopefully, someone will also have some suggestions for you!
DQ2 By this time, you have been to your site at least once,
maybe several times. From what you have seen so far, what theories, research
findings, concepts, or other knowledge in your field do you think will be most
applicable to your volunteer appointment? Explain your reasons for thinking
this. As you look at the responses of other students, especially those in the
same major as you, what are your thoughts about what they wrote? That is, can
you understand why they wrote what they did? Can you suggest other theories,
concepts, research findings, etc. that they did not think of? If so, explain to
them why you think these other ideas might help their experience.
Week 3 discussion
DQ1 Describe a communication problem you have had or are
having with someone at your site. What strategies are you using to resolve the
problem?
DQ2 Describe a time when you have encountered a problem with
communication in a personal, relationship, or professional setting. Why did the
communication problem occur? What could you have done differently so that
communication could have been smoother?
Week 4 discussion
DQ1 Briefly describe how you used problem-solving skills to
resolve a problem you encountered during your volunteer appointment. (The
problem may not have been one in the organization. It could also be one that
you encountered having to do with your role, or how you were going to
accomplish things during your volunteer appointment.) After you have posted
your contribution, read the contributions of two or three other students and
make constructive suggestions as to alternate ways they might have dealt with
the problem they presented. Be as specific as you can – do not simply say
something like, “you should have handled it differently.”
DQ2 In this or some other example of problem solving during
your volunteer experience, describe an instance where the problem may not have
been correctly identified at the beginning or where the solution was never
evaluated to see if it had the desired effect. Comment or ask questions about
your fellow students’ examples.
Week 5 discussion
DQ1 Apply the three phases of the decision-making process to
one of the following: a) a personal-social objective, b) an educational
objective, and c) a career objective. (See Lecture 5.)
DQ2 Plan how you will take further steps to “know
yourself” and “know the world of work.” (See Lecture 5.) Discuss
how you will merge these two sets of information to make better career
decisions.
Week 6 discussion
DQ1 Meet with the human resources director or the hiring
person at your site. (If there is no one with that title, speak with whoever
does some of the interviews of prospective new employees.) Ask that person at
least five questions to find out his/her best and worst interview experiences.
Describe the five questions that you asked and the answers that you received
when you met with the human resources director or hiring person at your site.
DQ2 Given that the average time a human resources employee
spends reviewing a resume is 45 seconds, what is the best length and style of
presentation (e.g., block text versus bullets) for a resume?
Week 7 discussion
DQ1 What one or two things you learned in your coursework at
GCU helped you most with your volunteer experience? Why did you pick those
things?
DQ2 Give an example of how you have used reflection and
critical thinking skills to solve a problem during your volunteer appointment.
