Choose an organisational activity, situation or process that is subject to environmental monitoring. Describe the activity/ process or situation and the impact it has or is likely to have on people or entities. (250-500 words)
Remember that safety (both physical and psychological) considerations are also an environmental consideration, and that the organisations and/or the processes you believe should be monitored do not necessarily have to be associated with major outflow functions. That is, fast food outlets have responsibilities with regard to cooking fat disposal, and packaging of foods; offices have responsibilities regarding paper waste and disposal of printer cartridges; manufacturing businesses have responsibilities regarding noise pollution and the effects of machinery/ process emissions on workers and the immediate environment and even households are subject to recycling considerations and noise pollution requirements.
Is the activity/ function/ process you have chosen subject to legislative controls? If it is, briefly describe the controls, the legislative requirements and the consequences of non-compliance. What is the name of the controlling body?
Construct a risk assessment matrix that describes the effects or potential effects of the activity or function and the controls that have been put in place to ensure that damage is minimised.
Do you consider that these controls are:
- Effective?
- Sufficient?
Who would be responsible for designing and developing the environmental monitoring process and for monitoring the success of the process?
Give reasons for your answers and suggest, where relevant, improvements that could be made.
Your answer should encompass:
- description of activity, function or process
- environmental impact (or potential impact)—in this description you need to include who or what would be affected and how they would be affected
- description of legislative controls and name of controlling body
- consequences of non-compliance for:
- the organisation
- employees
- current organisational controls—description, monitoring and reporting processes—are these controls:
- effective
- sufficient
- persons or departments (sections, teams) responsible for designing and developing the environmental monitoring process
- persons or departments (sections, teams) responsible for monitoring the success of the process
- improvement suggestions
- benefits of improvement
- time frames and cost
Consider the improvement suggestions you have made; How would you go about having them ratified and implemented by senior management?
Before submitting these strategies to senior management for approval would you consult with the members of your team/ division/ section to get their input? Why/ why not?
