Gender Discussion
Part 1
For this week’s applied assignment, let’s continue to learn from each other. So, for this week, please be sure to do the following:
Let’s talk about all of the microaggressions around us.
(1) Please share the microaggressions you have experienced or observed. Discuss what factors you think motivated or enabled those microaggressions (i.e., why would someone say or do that?)
(2) Then, take a moment and reflect on how you have contributed to this. Discuss the microaggressions have you done to others? What factors do you think motivated or enabled your actions/words then? How do you plan to avoid making mistakes like this again? (Note: Take a minute and really think about this answer. Simply saying you haven’t done this is taking the easy and unrealistic way out. I will also take points away from answers like that. Be thoughtful and honest here. That’s the only way we learn.)
(3) What does intent vs. impact mean to you? How has the difference become very real to you? How have your words had a negative impact on others before? How can you work to do better moving forward?
(4) Finally, what can you do to make a difference when it comes to microaggressions?
Part 2
Part 2 video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTvSfeCRxe8
“Violence Against Women – It’s a Men’s Issue” is an 18-minute TEDx Talk by Jackson Katz in which he proposes a reframing of the issue of domestic violence, putting men as the essential agents of change. Listen to this talk, post a comment about the video, and then read your classmates’ comments and reply to at least one of them. Have you heard friends make sexists comments? Were you unsure how to respond? Have you thought about how to help your brothers and sons respond to sexism? As usual, post two comments. One in response to the prompts and one in reply to a classmate.
