Your first written assignment will be an essay, written in APA format (If you
are unsure of the proper paper format, refer to the template provided in the
classroom or the resources in our online library). Your essay should be no more
than 3 pages of written content, along with a properly formatted title page and
reference page (5 pages total at most). An abstract should not be included. The
content for your essay is described below.
There are many places one could work in the hospitality industry. Some of the
segments that provide employment opportunities to hospitality graduates include
lodging, food service, tourism, meeting and event planning, and the cruise line
industry. Briefly describe each segment of the industry. Include industry
resources to define the size or employment reach of the industry. Identify at
least one example of a career that a hospitality management graduate could
pursue in each one of the above five segments, preferably a role you would
characterize as an ideal role for you. Each segment should be at least one
structured paragraph in your paper, possibly using one paragraph to describe or
define the industry segment and using another paragraph to focus on employment
in that segment. Use transitions.

Either using the ideal role you identified for yourself in the
week two assignment or choosing another (within hospitality), describe and
explain the necessary skills and knowledge required or would be preferred for
advancement in the field, from an entry level position to management
(preferably to general manager, vice president, or director level). The writing
should be outlined by job progression and you can refer to specific job
postings from company or third party job sites, like hcareers.com for example.
Furthering your self-assessment from week two, you will also
identify your steps to advancing within the chosen job role.
NOTE: Even if you are not actually planning to obtain employment
within hospitality, you will choose a hospitality job for the purpose of this
writing. Also, you should be reviewing the feedback from your week two
submission prior to beginning this assignment.

For this week’s assignment, you will be preparing a written essay
using APA format. Refer to the APA resources provided in the classroom and in
our online library for formatting questions. Be sure to review the feedback
from your previous assignments. Your essay should be 2 – 4 pages of written
content, along with a properly formatted title page and reference page. An
abstract should not be included. The content for your essay is described below.
Choosing a professional organization focused on a specific segment of the
hospitality industry that you are interested in (American Hotel & Lodging
Association, National Restaurant Association, ARAMARK, and Compass Group are
examples), describe and assess their role and influence within the industry
segment.
For the writing assignment, discuss who the group is, their roots,
how they influence the industry, and analyze their role in reacting to or
preventing a specific issue related to the industry. An example would be how
the AH&LA has been engaged with immigration reform or minimum wage or how
ARAMARK is incorporating “green” business practices to reduce
environmental harm.
Use the school’s online library to conduct further research on this
issue. Your essay should outline how this issue came to be important to the
industry, what the organization recommends as far as this legislative issue and
why, and how this issue has impacted the industry.
Be sure that you clearly define the issue, using a clear thesis statement. A
thesis statement basically states what you are proving in the essay. Develop
the issue within your essay and include a concluding paragraph. All the
supporting resources within the essay should add support to that thesis statement.

Please prepare a 5-7 page Essay on a current HOT TOPIC in one
of the hospitality management segments.
First,choose the segment of the Hospitality Industry that
interests you the most: Foodservice, Lodging, Travel & Tourism. NEXT,
choose an issue or concern that is affecting the industry segment, which could
be legislative, social, environmental, political, or technological.
For the writing, provide background or context for the issue,
explain the current state of the industry in relation to the issue, and compare
and contrast two possible outcomes (future state) of the issue. The writing
should describe how the industry is responding, identify how industry leaders
(individuals, companies, or organizations) are responding or adapting, and
explain how this issue became a hot button issue for the industry.
A well developed thesis statement should be written in your
introductory paragraph. This tells what the paper will be about. It basically
answers the question that the rest of your paper is developing and exploring.
The body of the paper should develop and support that thesis statement, using
valid industry and academic resources.
Include specific industry references and examples to
reinforce your points. Don’t forget to use the resources in our online library.
Be sure that you have reviewed any feedback you have received
regarding APA format from past assignments and be sure to apply the changes to
this project in order to earn the highest amount of points possible. The essay
should be inAPA format, about a segment in the industry that interests you and
focused on a current topic occurring in that industry segment today.
