Emergent Exercise:Total Points: 100
The most important aspect of multicultural learning is your willingness and ability to be open to new ideas, people and cultures that give rise to appreciation and value differences. However, all of us have blind spots, whether we are aware of them or not. The goal of this assignment is offer you an opportunity to experience what it may feel like to be “different”. This will be a structured opportunity to challenge yourself by doing an activity that you normally won’t do.
You will complete a cultural encounter and write about the experience.
To help you complete the exercise on a timely manner, you will submit three components in three steps.
- Proposal (10 points): You will have to write a half-page proposal that will explain the activity and why you are choosing it. The main point of this proposal is to communicate to me how the activity will challenge you.
- Reflection on the emergent experience (40 points): You will summarize the activity and describe your experience – how did you feel before attending the activity, what were your expectations about what it would be like to attend the activity, what happened, how did you feel, did your affective reaction change while or after your activity was complete, did the activity change your thoughts, belief. Minimum page limit for the reaction paper is 5 pages.
- Literature review: You will review 3 peer-reviewed empirical articles on a topic that was most salient to you during the emergent activity. You will summarize each study, integrate the findings from studies and discuss the implications of the findings. You will begin the paper with a discussion of the area of research.
