Illustrating Sociological Concepts through Video
Throughout the semester I have shown various video clips to illustrate sociological concepts. This
assignment is your turn to show me!
A number of sociological concept(s) are listed below.(these pertain to this particular chapter, however
you may use others that come up from earlier in the semester.
Look for a feature film, a documentary, a news program, or an episode of TV series that you believe will
illustrate at least five (5) different concepts from the list, or have multiple examples of three (3) of the
concepts, e.g., two examples of role strain, two examples of meritocracy, two examples of prejudice, for
a total of six (6) examples.
You Sociological Video Review must contain all of the elements below. Criteria Description Video Title,
Information Title and year of the video. Did you find it online, Netflix, DVD, Hulu+, or… Concepts to
identify Which concepts/terms are you going to illustrate with elements of this video? Summary of
Video Write one paragraph summarizing the video in your own words. Sociological
Analysis 1. Write at least one paragraph per concept the video is illustrating.
The paragraph will entail the following: This is the most important part!
a. Define and Cite the source of each concept and make a very clear/explicit
connection with your example between the scene in the video and the
concept from the text being illustrated. Note the “time” in the video where
this concept is being illustrated
b. How do you see this concept as it is illustrated in the video apply to the real
world? Where else have you seen this same concept in everyday life? Trigger

Concerns Identify any concerns viewers may have about this video. Graphic violence or
sexuality? Inappropriate language? Adult themes? Works Cited/
Citations Cite the text when appropriate, definition of terms, additional information, etc.
Failure to cite even paraphrased information may result in loss of points.
If you quote a character in your video, cite by noting the time in the video the
character made the statement. Grammar/
Organization Use academic writing conventions: Full and complete sentences/thoughts, a
paragraph is a minimum of five sentences. NO Bullet points.
1. First paragraph–Intro: What you are doing, illustrating sociological concepts through popular culture
2. Second paragraph: brief description of video/movie
3. Third and subsequent paragraphs: Concepts/terms #1-5 (total of 5-6 paragraphs)
4. Works Cited (no need for separate page, Provide details of the video (title, year,
where found, e.g., Netflix, DVD) and of the course the Text
5. Minimum paragraph count = seven (7) You should re-read your notes or the chapter to make sure you make the best connections. It is
advisable to watch the video through once to get your ideas on which concepts you will be illustrating,
then watch it a second time to make the connection between the example and the concept.
