Application
Dynamics of Group Behavior
You may want to familiarize yourself with the MSL Application Rubric Weeks 1–5 before you begin this
Application Assignment, and then refer to it as needed throughout the week. The rubric is located in
the Rubrics area in the left navigation bar. Read the articles by Tuckman (1965), Mcgrath (1991), and Gersick (1988). After researching these
theorists, develop a table outlining the central points the researchers are making.
Then, consider the following questions as you write a 1- to 2-page paper. These questions serve to
provide a framework for you to begin your thinking process (do not answer them individually); you must
explain your reasoning as you formulate your formal response. What does each of these theorists have to say about group evolutionary processes? That is, how
do groups evolve? Do you think that these evolutionary processes are mutually exclusive, or could they apply to all
groups in some way? If yes, how? If no, why not? What can leaders glean from these theorists to help them better understand group functioning
over time? The models presented as part of this assignment inform the knowledgeable leader. How can a
leader use the models to facilitate group or team development while helping the group or team
to accomplish its purposes and goals? Given your view of organizations and your personal leadership orientation, how are you
informed?
