NUR620 The Theoretical Basis of Advance

Assignment – Progressive Concept Analysis Assignment – In Pairs or Trios

Concept analysis is a structured approach to clarify the definition and meaning of abstract terms (concepts) so writers and readers share a common language. It is done when concepts require clarification or further development to define them for a nursing education, theory development, research, or practice. Use the example in Blackboard. We use Avant and Walker’s eight-step Concept Analysis approach:

Select a concept.

Determine the aims or purposes of analysis

Identify the uses/definitions of the concept in the literature (3 articles per student – 6 per pair or 9 per trio). This can be in nursing or any discipline (ex. psychology, business, law, other healthcare). For each write a 60-80 word summary on the use of the concept in the article and the outcome of using it (NOT a summary of the whole article)

Determine 6-8 defining attributes or characteristics of the concept

Identify 4-6 antecedents (what happens before) and 4-6 consequences (what happens after) the concept occurs

Create a 250-300 word model case that shows how the concept appears in real-life

Create a 250-300 word contrary case that shows how the opposite of the concept appears in real-life

Define at least one empirical referent (how we can measure/identify that the concept exists). Identify others if they exist. (approx 100-125 words, will vary)

Students will work in pairs in the BB Discussion Board to complete this assignment over 5 weeks. Together with the partner, a concept will be chosen from the list below (sign up in BB). If you have another concept idea contact the professor for approval. Do not copy and paste content – plagiarism will result in a zero grade. Paraphrase using your own thoughts and words. Avoid quotations in academic writing. An example of the concept burnout is provided in the Discussion Board.
