N347 Media Paper
Evaluation Guidelines (50 points)
Fall 2014
“We don’t see things as they are; we see them as we are”
Anais Nin.
This review will focus on a movie depicting some sort of
issue that affects us as healthcare professionals. Ideas for your selection of a movie may
come from the list at the end of these guidelines. If you have a movie in mind that is not on
this list please discuss with me for consideration and approval before midterm.
View a movie in which the focus is on an issue that affects
us as health care professionals. This
could be a particular issue such as homelessness, information technology,
managed care, or a particular illness, such as mental illness….the list could
go on and on. If you have previously
viewed the movie, watch it again with this assignment in mind.
Write a
media evaluation highlighting your critical thinking skills. Focus your paper on the following points.
Begin your paper by briefly summarizing the movie. (Keep in mind, I may have not viewed it!) In
what manner does the movie portray persons with health care issues, (e.g.,
positively/negatively, and/or stereotypically/realistically.) Refer to the movie’s strengths and weaknesses
relative to these points.
What kind of impact did the movie have on you? (e.g., inspiring/depressing, significant
impact/little impact) Give specific examples
of why you think it evoked these feelings. How did this movie connect to your
own personal experiences?
Discuss some possible societal effects, implications, or
consequences of the portrayal of persons with health care issues or of the
coverage of health care issues?
Relate these too course readings and group discussions.
Utilize at least two sources for this paper to support how this movie relates
to course content. One source should be one of our critical thinking text,
professional concepts text, or a nursing journal article. The second source may be from a magazine or
newspaper article.
Write clearly in 3-5 typed pages, 12 font, following APA
Guidelines, (title page, reference page etc.; no abstract needed) with good use
of grammar and spelling.
This paper needs an introduction and a conclusion. The body of the paper can be movie
summarization and societal issues.
Always keep in mind that this work is your own, not to have
been used by another or in another class.
Be prepared to discuss your media evaluation in class
discussion board in week 8. See Syllabus for due date.
