Choose an everyday social phenomenon and “exoticize the familiar” bydescribing in careful, perceptive detail its aspects that you would otherwise take forgranted. You must focus your essay on ONE specific phenomenon. Your phenomenonmust be specific, e.g. “texting on dates” or “snacking habits in class” not general, e.g.“the spread of technology” or “bad manners.” Horace Miner’s essay, “Body RitualAmong the Nacirema,” provides some helpful and creative examples of how you mightapproach your essay. Focus on telling your reader what your phenomenon is, but don’tpresume yet to explain how or why it exists or occurs.
