SOCIOLOGY
PROJECT (PART ONE)

Part 1 of the critical thinking project requires you to
begin researching the drug on which you will focus.

The first step is focusing on the core issues and concepts
of drugs. Defining something as a drug and understanding the significance of
the idea of “drugs” being “social constructs”, as well as
exploring why people use drugs. So, in this first part of your project, you
need to discuss these issues and concepts.

Part One Assignment:

• Choose a
drug on which you will focus.

• Discuss
the general definitions and issues surrounding your drug. Rely on reputable
studies, articles, and books.(125 words minimum).

• Next,
discuss theeffects associated with your drug focusing on the variety of
elements that shape the user experience (“drug, set, and setting”).
Rely on reputable studies, articles, and books. Websites that meet the criteria
for reputable work can also be used. Your analysis should be the equivalent of
about 125 words (minimum).

• Discuss
relevant theories of use of your drug focusing on and succinctly describing
theories (you must include one sociological theory).

o Support
your analysis with clear, well-reasoned evidence and include at least one
relevant, peer-reviewed article from a sociological journal to support your
discussion (you’ll need to provide a brief synopsis of this article and explain
how it fits into your analysis. Rely on reputable studies, articles, and books.
Websites that meet the criteria for reputable work can also be used.

o Your
analysis should be the equivalent of about 250 words (one page).

o We want
to see critical thinking.

The student developing critical thinking skills does the
following:

1. Identifies and summarizes the problem/question at issue

2. Identifies and presents the students’ own hypothesis,
perspective and position as it is important to the analysis of the issue

3. Identifies and considers other salient perspectives and
positions that are important to the analysis.

4. Identifies and assesses the quality of supporting
data/evidence and provides additional data/evidence related to the issue.

6. Identifies and considers the influence of the social
context on the issue.

7. Identifies and assesses conclusions, implications and
