Review the article “From the Streets to Cyberspace: U.S.
Gangs Turn to White-Collar Crime.” Then research and write a two (2) page
analysis in response to what you learn in regards to the following questions:
Which one is more violent “White Collar Crime” or
“Street Crime” and why?
Do you think that our society generally demonstrates a
double standard in terms of prosecution? Someone convicted of fraud in one
jurisdiction might be sentenced to one or two years in prison. Another person
convicted of the same offense in a different jurisdiction might receive 10 or
20 years in prison. Is there a disparity in enforcement and sentencing for
white-collar crimes and “street” or blue-collar crimes in the federal
system? Give examples.
If someone were convicted of a cyber crime in 1997 when
there were fewer successful prosecutions and the government may have been
trying to set an example with lengthy sentences, what would a convicted felon’s
chance of appeal be today?
