In one of my previous class years ago, conflict ensued due to assertive personality clashes, and students feeling the “need” to lead the group despite the instructions that all members were equal. Through coaching, students realized the need for effective communication, trust, and synergy in their group. This allowed them to discover the strengths of each member, and worked towards tapping into those strengths.

Overall, improving communication is critical through it all. Active listening is perhaps the most important aspect of effective communication (Robbins & Judges, 2013). The five basic rules for active listening are: listening for message content, listen for feelings, respond to feelings, note all cues, and paraphrase and restate.
What other communication barriers can be attributed to diversity such as cross-cultural communication?
