Here are the readings from SEX MATTERS: THE SEXUALITY AND SOCIETY READER (4TH EDITION) —- the sorcerers apprentice: why we can’t stop circumcising boys, the politics of female genitalia, fixing the broken male machine, in search of better sexual pleasure and boundary breaches.
1. In your readings this week, the issue of genital circumcision and mutilation is addressed. Your lecture notes discuss Rogaia Mustafa Abusharaf’s research on genital mutilation as presented in Unmasking Tradition: A Sudanese Anthropologist Confronts Female “Circumcision” and It’s Terrible Tenacity (again, this is not in your book, nor are you required to read it. However, you are responsible for knowing the lecture notes that discuss this article).
2. Given what you read in the articles for this week and your lecture notes, what is your opinion of female genital mutilation/circumcision? Do you think this practice is acceptable for certain cultures? Why or why not? What should be done (if anything) to try to stop these practices? What would these efforts include? Would attempts to stop these practices be ethnocentric? What about the practice of male circumcision? Do you think this practice is acceptable? If so, why? If not, why?
